Here are described
the embryonic and
larval sensory organs of D.
melanogaster that are located in abdominal segments A1-A7 (their
pattern, morphology and development). Motoneurons and glial cells that
are not associated to sensory organs are not considered here. The
embryonic expression pattern of useful sensory markers, some of which
have
not been reported previously, is also indicated. Although the
embryonic PNS is extensively studied as a powerful model of
developmental biology, many discrepancies regarding the abdominal PNS
pattern (number of neurons, relative positions of the cells...) are
still found in the literature. This web page is intended to synthesize
all the present studies and proposes a consensual PNS pattern.
All the sensory organ cells described here are
formed during
embryogenesis from stage 11
to stage 15. As opposed to most other insects, no additional sensory
cell
arises during larval stages. Thus, the embryonic PNS greatly resembles
the larval PNS. Each of the seven abdominal segments A1-A7 show the
same sensory organ pattern.
