Laurent Schwartz, un mathématicien face aux guerres

" Faites attention, les mathématiciens sont très puissants dans le monde. Je vous préviens que, d'ici peu de temps, on parlera de Leonid Plioutch dans toutes les capitales du monde." Cette phrase, écrite par Laurent Schwartz (1915-2002) dans son autobiographie, souvenir des années 1970, peut faire sourire. C'est néanmoins la manière dont il a choisi de s'engager pour lutter contre les guerres, les injustices et les violations des droits de l'homme. Un engagement en tant que mathématicien, auquel je vais m'intéresser à travers plusieurs exemples de natures et de périodes différentes. Quelles peuvent-être les "armes" du mathématicien ? Comment justifie-t-il ses interventions ? Où situer la distinction entre science et opinion ? Je vais essayer de montrer le type de réponses apportées par Schwartz dans ces circonstances. Je parlerai notamment du Comité Audin ainsi que du Comité des Mathématiciens, ou encore de l'organisation du Congrès International des Mathématiciens de 1982 en Pologne.

“Be careful, the mathematicians are very powerful in the world. I warn you that before long, they will be talking about Leonid Plioutch in every capital of the world”. This sentence, a memory from the 1970s described in Laurent Schwartz’s (1915-2002) autobiography, can be read as a joke. It is nonetheless a testament to his involvement against war, injustice, and violations of human rights. I will illustrate this involvement through several examples of different kinds and from different periods. What kinds of “weapons” can a mathematician use? How can he justify such interventions? What is the boundary between science and opinion? I will try to show the kind of answers that Schwartz gave to these questions under these circumstances. I will speak in particular about the Comité Audin and the Comité des mathématiciens as well as about the establishment of the International Congress of mathematicians in Poland in 1982
